Today I discarded all my rock climbing gear. And it was really weird.
I have loved rocked climbing since the first time I tried it in 1978, at IdyllWild, California. Since then, I have sought out places to climb in every area I have ever lived in or visited. The last time I went climbing (top roping) was about 10 years ago at Big Sur in Northern, California, on a cliff right on the ocean. Wow…
Rock climbing is one of those activities I mention on the website aboveitall360.com because it can create a kind of portal to the metaphysical (beyond physical) realm.
I was born in 1954, so you do the math. Today, I realized that climbing was then and Now is now. As I started throwing away my old climbing shoes, worn out ropes, chalk bags, pieces (nuts and hexes), carabineers, ribbons and a couple harnesses, the identification of over 4 decades of incredible events, memories and emotions hit me with every item I tossed away.
What’s up with that? We associate physical objects with what once was. We all do it, to a greater or lesser degree and it is pretty intense sometimes, to say the least.
We’re supposed to suck it up and say, “Oh well… on to the next chapter…” but in reality, that’s really hard to do when that previous chapter was so incredible!
